![]() That said, code for optional user names is in testing in the Signal codebase for when you don't want to share the phone number your account is tied to. It's far easier to use one's existing social network that's on their phone's contacts app already for ordinary users that just want an easy user experience. Whereas if you use Signal (and your friend does too), every single thing you do on there is end-to-end encrypted and metadata protecting to the point where Signal don't even know whom is messaging who, using the phone number all your friends already have to easily find you (and the Signal service itself doesn't have access to your contacts). You probably already own a SIM with a phone which you use to make calls and SMS with your contacts which have next to zero security (no encryption) or privacy (metadata for your telco provider) which also aren't anonymous (they know it's tied to your user account). Signal gives you security and privacy, not anonymity which is a different thing. Signal is another one.if it's so secure and private, why the heck do you need my phone number? * No discussions of specific VPNs – please visit r/VPN or our PrivacyGuides coverage of VPNs.
